Andafiavaratra Palace (Madagascar)

Weather…

The Andafiavaratra Palace stands on one of the highest hills in Antananarivo, near the royal Rova complex. It was the official residence of Rainilaiarivony, who served as Prime Minister during the 19th century, married three consecutive queens, and effectively ruled the country. The imposing red brick building was designed by architect William Pool and, with its four corner towers and glass dome, reflects the European influence on the Malagasy elite of that era. After a fire in 1976, the palace was restored and now serves as a museum housing artifacts rescued from the 1995 fire at the Rova. Exhibits include royal crowns, garments, state documents, and furniture documenting the history of the Merina monarchy. The palace is a significant monument to Madagascar's political transformation prior to French colonization. From its terraces, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the lower city and the surrounding rice fields.
