Rova of Antananarivo (Madagascar)

Weather…

The Rova of Antananarivo is a monumental palace complex situated on Analamanga Hill, the highest point in the capital city. For centuries, it served as the political and spiritual center of the Merina Kingdom and later the unified Kingdom of Madagascar. The central building, Manjakamiadana (The Queen's Palace), was originally built of wood in 1839 for Queen Ranavalona I and later reinforced with a distinctive stone facade. In November 1995, a devastating fire destroyed much of the complex, leading to the loss of many irreplaceable cultural treasures. In the following decades, the site underwent extensive reconstruction to restore the city's historic skyline. Today, the Rova houses a national museum and the tombs of prominent monarchs, making it a central symbol of Malagasy sovereignty. From the palace walls, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire city and the surrounding twelve sacred hills.
