Royal Hill of Ambohimanga (Madagascar)

Weather…

Ambohimanga, the "Blue Hill," is Madagascar's most significant sacred site and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001. For centuries, the hill served as the religious capital and burial ground for the Merina monarchs who unified the island in the 18th century. The complex includes King Andrianampoinimerina's royal palace, constructed from ebony, as well as sacred basins and tombs. A massive defensive wall dating back to 1847 surrounds the site, with mortar traditionally made from lime and millions of egg whites. Until the late 19th century, access for foreigners was strictly forbidden, emphasizing the spiritual exclusivity of the area. Even today, ritual offerings and ancestor worship ceremonies take place here, as Ambohimanga is seen as a symbol of Malagasy national identity. The architecture reflects a unique blend of traditional highland building styles and early European influences.
