Heffingen Castle Mound (Luxembourg)

Weather…

The Heffingen castle mound, locally often referred to as 'Héchel', is a fascinating archaeological monument from the High Middle Ages. It is a classic motte, a tower mound castle built on an artificially created earth hill. This form of fortification was typical for the lower nobility of the 11th and 12th centuries and served as both a residence and a defensive installation. Strategically located, the site allowed for the control of the Black Ernz valley and the adjacent territories. Archaeological investigations have yielded remains of ditch systems and evidence of wooden palisades that once crowned the hill. Although the wooden structures have long since perished, the impressive earthwork remains a clear sign of medieval engineering in the Gutland region. The site is now a protected cultural monument and provides hikers insight into the early feudal history of Luxembourg before the emergence of large stone castles.
