Osterbour Nature Reserve (Luxembourg)

Weather…

The Osterbour nature reserve is situated in an easy on the eye valley near Larochette and is renowned for its significant spring areas and wet forests. The name 'Bour' in Luxembourgish denotes a spring, and indeed, lime-rich water emerges from the rock here, leading to the formation of rare tufa (calcareous tuff) formations. These mineral deposits provide a unique habitat for specialized algae and mosses. The surrounding slope forests are dominated by old ash and alder trees that thrive in the damp valley floor. Historically, the spring was an important water source for both people and livestock; today, the area primarily serves to protect drinking water resources and preserve biodiversity. A well-developed network of hiking trails connects Osterbour with the nearby Larochette Castle, offering nature enthusiasts diverse insights into the region's hydrology.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The black stork nests from April to August in the reserve - the best time is late spring when the young are being fed. Autumn also features good opportunities to observe migratory birds at the ponds.
🌅
Best time of day
In the early morning hours between 6 and 9 am, the black stork is most active foraging along the streams. Dusk from around 6 pm is well-suited for observing the return to the nesting sites.
📜
Etiquette
Keep a large distance from the nesting sites - disturbance can lead to abandonment of the clutch. Entering the meadows and banks is not permitted; stay on the paths.
🎒
What to bring
A spotting scope or binoculars with high magnification (20-60x) is necessary to observe the shy stork from a safe distance. Camouflage clothing and calm behavior help avoid scaring the animals.
🧭
Getting there
The Osterbour reserve is located near Fischbach and is accessible via the N7. A hiking parking lot at the forest edge provides access to circular trails that lead along the stream valley to the ponds.
🦌
What to expect
The black stork is very sensitive to disturbance - remain completely still and avoid sudden movements. Observation often only succeeds after several visits and at the right times of day.
