The Elteschmuel Nature Reserve is located in the municipality of Useldange in western Luxembourg and covers an area of approximately 23 hectares. It was officially classified as a zone of national interest (ZPIN) in 2017 by a grand ducal regulation to safeguard its specific wetland habitats. The area is characterized by valuable wet meadows, reed beds, and sedge marshes extending along the Attert River. These ecosystems provide an important sanctuary for endangered bird species such as the red-backed shrike, as well as various amphibians and insects. Through regular extensive grazing, the openness of the landscape is actively promoted, ensuring long-term biological diversity. Elteschmuel also functions as a vital natural retention area during flooding events of the Attert, highlighting its ecological significance for the entire region. The combination of aquatic and terrestrial habitats makes it a central piece of the local biotope network.

Best season
The best period to observe nesting birds and wildflowers is from April to June, when meadows are lush and birds are most active. For autumn migrants and mushroom enthusiasts, September and October offer a quieter but equally rewarding experience in this mosaic of forests and streams.
Best time of day
Early morning around sunrise gives the highest bird activity and the softest light for photography. Late afternoon into dusk is also excellent, as many mammals venture out to feed in the fading light.
Etiquette
Always stay on marked paths to avoid disturbing sensitive nesting sites. Do not feed any wildlife, and keep dogs on a leash at all times, especially during breeding season.
What to bring
Bring a pair of binoculars (8x or 10x magnification) to spot birds and distant animals. Waterproof hiking boots are essential for crossing damp meadows and muddy stream banks.
Getting there
The reserve is accessible via small roads from Nommern; a small parking area exists at the main entrance. From there, well-marked trails lead through the mosaic of habitats.
What to expect
Wildlife in this mosaic landscape can be patchy; you may need to wait quietly in one spot for several minutes. Patience is rewarded when a shy deer or a singing warbler finally appears.
