Echternach is the oldest city in Luxembourg, located in the eastern part of the country on the Sauer river, which forms the border with Germany. The city was founded in 698 by Saint Willibrord, who established a significant abbey here. Today, Echternach is world-famous for its Dancing Procession, a religious tradition that has been part of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2010. Besides the monumental basilica housing the saint's tomb, the city impresses with its medieval market square and the Gothic town hall (Denzelt). Archaeologically, the Roman Villa of Echternach is of immense importance, being one of the largest and most magnificent Roman sites north of the Alps. Geographically, the city serves as the gateway to the Müllerthal region, known as "Little Switzerland" due to its bizarre rock formations. As a cultural and tourist hub, Echternach blends ancient history with lively traditions and is a key junction for international hiking trails.
