The White Ernz Valley (Ärenz) stretches through the eastern part of Luxembourg and forms one of the country's most scenic landscape regions. The river originates near Scheidgen and flows north for over 30 kilometers until it joins the Sûre River at Reisdorf. Geologically, the river has carved deep valleys into the Luxembourg sandstone, resulting in spectacular rock formations and narrow gorges, particularly in the 'Little Luxembourg Switzerland' area. The region is characterized by dense forests, wide meadows, and small historic villages such as Larochette, which is overlooked by its imposing castle ruins. Historically, the valley played a significant role in local industry, as the water power of the White Ernz has been used since the Middle Ages to power numerous grain and oil mills. Today, the valley is a major center for hiking tourism, with the Mullerthal Trail being one of the most famous hiking routes in the region. The ecological quality of the river is continuously improved through various renaturation projects.

Getting there
The White Ernz Valley is typically approached via the tranquil villages scattered throughout this agriculturally characterized region. Many hikes start directly from the easily accessible village squares or local country roads.
Best season
Unlike the deep rocky gorges of the region, this more open valley captures plenty of sunlight, making it particularly appealing in spring and autumn. Depending on the season, the agricultural lands offer a constantly changing, colorful panorama.
Terrain & paths
The landscape features gentler hills and wide, agriculturally used floodplains that are noticeably less rugged than the Black Ernz. Hiking trails often traverse relaxed dirt tracks, meadow paths, and well-prepared walking routes.
What to bring
Comfortable footwear suited for light hiking is generally entirely sufficient in this milder terrain. On sunny days, however, good sun protection is important, as the open fields and floodplains offer less shade than deep forests.
Parking
Because the valley is less tourism-focused than its neighboring areas, trouble-free parking can often be found in the villages. Local parking lots at community halls or churches frequently serve as unofficial starting points for hikes.
Safety
The open terrain poses hardly any notable dangers, but walkers should be considerate of the agricultural use of the paths. It is important to stay on the marked trails to avoid trespassing on privately cultivated fields.
Time needed
The relaxed hikes through the White Ernz Valley usually span about two to three hours, making them highly family-friendly. Traversing the entire valley at a leisurely pace, however, can easily fill a pleasant half-day.
