Viekšniai Windmill (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Viekšniai Windmill is a prominent technical monument in the Samogitia region, standing as a symbol of the agrarian historical development of northern Lithuania. Built in the late 19th century, it is a wooden Dutch-style windmill resting on a stone foundation. Originally used for processing grain from surrounding farms, it remained in operation until the mid-20th century. The mill features a rotating cap that allowed the sails to be optimally positioned according to the wind. Despite the modernization of agriculture, the structure was preserved as an important example of traditional craftsmanship and engineering. Inside, fragments of the original millstones and mechanical drive systems can be seen, illustrating the functioning of historical milling processes. Restoration work in recent decades has helped maintain the building's authentic character. Today, the mill is part of a museum circuit in Viekšniai and attracts visitors interested in technical history and Lithuania's rural heritage.
