Established in 1979, the Kamanos Nature Reserve is located in northern Lithuania, in the Akmenė region, and is dedicated to the protection of a mesmerizing raised bog complex. The Kamanos bog is characterized by its unique and dense network of over 120 small, crystal-clear bog pools (kolks) positioned within the peat landscape. Shaped by Ice Age glaciers, this area presents extreme living conditions to which a highly specialized flora and fauna have adapted. Carnivorous plants such as sundew, rare orchid species, and various sphagnum mosses thrive in this acidic environment. The reserve's strict isolation makes it a secure haven for the moor frog and numerous bird species, most notably the striking European golden plover, which breeds in the open expanse of the bog. To prevent any damage to the highly sensitive ecosystem, general public access is strictly prohibited, and the reserve can only be visited on specially constructed wooden boardwalks while accompanied by official park guides.
