Naujoji Akmenė, literally meaning “New Akmenė,” is one of Lithuania's youngest cities and the administrative center of the Akmenė District in the far north of the country. The city was built from scratch in 1952, following Soviet urban planning principles, specifically to house the workers of the newly constructed, massive “Akmenės cementas” cement plant. To this day, the region's landscape is dominated by the huge facilities of the cement factory and the gigantic, almost lunar-like limestone quarries. Despite its primarily industrial origins, significant emphasis was placed on creating wide, green avenues and public parks, giving the town a surprisingly relaxed atmosphere. Naujoji Akmenė stands as a fascinating example of a mid-20th-century functional monotown.
