Šeškinė Esker (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Šeškinė Esker is an exceptional geological formation located right in the middle of the dense urban area of the capital, Vilnius. It is a narrow, winding ridge created at the very end of the last ice age by powerful meltwater streams flowing beneath or within the glacier, which deposited massive quantities of sand and gravel. The esker gracefully stretches for approximately 1.1 kilometers through the Šeškinė neighborhood, reaching a remarkable height of up to 18 meters above its immediate surroundings in certain sections. Because of its extreme geological rarity and the fact that it has been perfectly preserved within a modern, densely populated cityscape, it is strictly protected as a national natural monument. Today, it serves as a highly popular recreational area for local residents, featuring walking paths along its crest that offer unique insights into the region's icy past.
