Veisiejai is a historic town in the Lazdijai district of southern Lithuania, uniquely situated on a peninsula of Lake Ančia. The settlement was first mentioned in historical records in 1501, during the era of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. One of its most significant architectural landmarks is the Church of St. George, a Neoclassical building completed in 1817 that remains a focal point of the urban landscape. The town is internationally recognized for its association with Ludwik Zamenhof, the creator of Esperanto, who lived and worked here as a physician in 1885 while finalizing his linguistic theories. The Veisiejai manor park is one of the oldest in Lithuania, covering approximately 17 hectares and hosting various rare plant species and historical tree specimens. Today, Veisiejai serves as a regional cultural hub and a popular destination for water-based tourism due to its surrounding lake system and well-preserved historical layout.
