Krekenava is situated along the Nevėžis River in central Lithuania, serving as the administrative center of the Krekenava Regional Park. The settlement is first documented in historical records from 1409 and has long been a significant local religious hub. Its most prominent architectural landmark is the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a neo-Gothic red brick structure completed in 1902 featuring twin 57-meter towers. The surrounding region is ecologically vital, hosting a European bison paddock established in 1969 where these majestic animals are protected and bred. Visitors often explore the 30-meter-high steel observation tower nearby, which features panoramic views of the river valley and forest landscapes. The town maintains a traditional rural character while preserving important cultural artifacts related to the history of the Nevėžis lowland.
