Krakinava Basilica
The Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Krakinava is a premier pilgrimage destination and one of the most significant Roman Catholic churches in Lithuania. Built in the neo-Gothic style at the beginning of the 20th century, the basilica stands as a majestic landmark with its twin spires rising above the Nevėžis River valley. The church is famous for housing a miraculous 17th-century painting of the Virgin Mary, which has drawn pilgrims seeking spiritual healing for generations. The annual Žolinės festival (Feast of the Assumption) in August is a major event that transforms the quiet town into a lively center of devotion. Inside, the basilica features a harmonious blend of Gothic structure and ornate Baroque altarpieces. In 2011, it was honored with the status of Minor Basilica, cementing its role as a vital guardian of Lithuanian religious heritage and sacred art.
