Al Ain Zoo (United Arab Emirates)

Weather…

Al Ain Zoo was established in 1968 by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the United Arab Emirates, and is the largest zoo in the Middle East. It spans an area of approximately 400 hectares at the base of the Jebel Hafeet mountain range. The zoo is internationally recognized for its significant conservation efforts for endangered species, particularly the Arabian Oryx and the Scimitar-horned Oryx. The facility is home to over 4,000 animals from more than 200 different species, housed in spacious enclosures designed to mimic their natural habitats. A key highlight is the Al Ain Safari, opened in 2016, which is one of the world's largest man-made safaris, allowing visitors to observe African and Arabian wildlife in an open savanna setting. In addition to animal exhibits, the zoo features the Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre, a state-of-the-art educational facility focused on desert ecology.

Visiting
Visitors can explore vast, carefully designed habitats that mimic natural desert environments, offering excellent views of rare regional wildlife. The expansive grounds require significant walking, but buggy services and shaded areas are usually available for comfort.
🕒
Typical hours
The park generally operates daily from morning until late evening, with extended hours often implemented during cooler winter months and public holidays. Safari experiences may operate on specific, pre-scheduled time slots, so planning ahead is wise.
📷
Photography
Photography is heavily encouraged, especially during the captivating animal feeding sessions and across the remarkable safari landscapes. A zoom lens is highly recommended to capture detailed shots of animals in the larger, open enclosures without causing them distress.
⏱️
Time needed
Expect to spend at least three to four hours to fully appreciate the main exhibits, enjoy a scheduled animal encounter, and have a meal. If you opt to participate in the dedicated safari tour, you should easily allocate a full half-day or more.
Combine with
It is perfectly positioned to be combined with other attractions in Al Ain, such as the Al Jahili Fort, the lush Al Ain Oasis, or a drive up Jebel Hafeet. This makes it a core component of a well-rounded weekend trip from Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
🧭
Getting there
The zoo is clearly signposted and easily accessible by car, offering vast, free parking lots for visitors. Taxis from the center of Al Ain are readily available and represent a straightforward, affordable way to reach the entrance if you are without a vehicle.
💡
Insider tip
Booking safari tickets well in advance online is highly recommended, as spots fill up rapidly during peak tourist seasons. Arriving early in the day or later in the afternoon greatly increases your chances of seeing the animals at their most active.
