Jebel Hafeet, rising above the city of Al Ain in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, is one of the most prominent mountains in the region, reaching an elevation of 1,249 meters. The 11.7-kilometer mountain road to the summit, featuring 60 distinct turns, is frequently cited as one of the best driving roads in the world, offering spectacular views of the Al Ain oasis and the surrounding desert. At the foot of the mountain is Green Mubazzarah, a popular recreational area with natural hot springs surfacing from the earth. Getting there
Jebel Hafeet is located near Al Ain and is easily accessible via a world-famous, winding asphalt road. The drive to the summit starts at the outskirts of Al Ain and follows well-lit lanes to observation decks at over 1,200 meters in elevation.
Best season
A visit is possible year-round, with the winter months being the most pleasant for hiking at the foot of the mountain. During the hot summer months, a late afternoon or evening trip is recommended, as it is noticeably cooler at the summit than in the city.
Terrain & paths
The mountain is made of light-colored limestone and has a rugged, craggy surface. While drivers follow the smooth road, hikers will find challenging trails over loose rock and steep ridges that require sure-footedness.
What to bring
No special equipment is needed for the car ride, but for hiking, mountain boots and plenty of water are essential. In the evening, it can be windy and cool at the summit, so having a light jacket is sensible.
Parking
There are several large, paved parking lots along the mountain road and a very extensive parking area directly on the summit plateau. Numerous parking spaces are also available at the foot of the mountain near the 'Green Mubazzarah' park.
Safety
Drivers should brake cautiously, especially during the descent, to avoid brake overheating. Hikers should watch for areas prone to rockfall and, due to the heat, never set off without a head covering and sufficient supplies.
Time needed
A simple drive to the summit with a short stay takes about one to two hours. Those wishing to bathe in the hot springs at the base or hike extensively should plan for about three to five hours for the trip.
