Krekenava Regional Park (Lithuania)

Weather…

Krekenava Regional Park, established in 1992 in central Lithuania, is an area of immense scenic and historical value dedicated to protecting the enchanting middle reaches of the Nevėžis River. The landscape is characterized by broad, classical river floodplains, countless meandering oxbow lakes, and highly fertile water-meadows. These tranquil, frequently inundated floodplains serve as a crucial habitat for countless wading birds and waterfowl, while also providing prime hunting grounds for the white stork. However, the park gained international renown for its pivotal role in wildlife conservation: it is home to the large Pašiliai European bison breeding facility (Pašilių stumbrynas). This center has been instrumental in saving the European bison, Europe's heaviest land mammal, from extinction and successfully reintroducing it into the Lithuanian wilderness. Today, free-roaming herds of bison majestically wander through the dense mixed forests of the surrounding area. Botanically, the Nevėžis valley is also exceptionally rich, featuring ancient oaks and elms draped in ivy.
