Awhlah Fort (United Arab Emirates)

Weather…

Awhlah Fort, also known as Al Wahla Fort, is considered one of the oldest and most significant fortifications in the Emirate of Fujairah. Located strategically in Wadi Ham, it controlled the access route between the coast and the interior for centuries. Archaeological excavations suggest that parts of its foundations date back to the Iron Age, while the current structure was erected in the 18th century. The fort is characterized by its massive walls and an imposing circular defensive tower perched on a rocky outcrop. The construction method combines hewn stones with a mud-gypsum mixture, providing the structure with exceptional durability. During the colonial era and inter-tribal conflicts, Awhlah was a key point for securing territorial sovereignty. Following extensive restoration, it now serves as a cultural monument illustrating the region's deep-rooted military history and the continuity of settlement in this arid valley.
