Bernardine Church (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Church of St. Francis of Assisi, commonly known as the Bernardine Church, stands as one of the most outstanding examples of Lithuanian brick Gothic architecture. Founded at the end of the 15th century by Bernardine monks, the building, together with the adjacent monastery, formed a crucial part of Vilnius's urban defense system. This defensive past is still evident today through the loopholes visible in the upper facade. Over the centuries, the impressive structure underwent numerous transformations, resulting in a unique fusion of robust Gothic frameworks with opulent Renaissance and Baroque details. Inside the church, visitors can admire 14 elaborately carved wooden altars, as well as some of the oldest surviving frescoes in Lithuania, which were only rediscovered during restoration works in the late 1980s. Together with the immediately adjacent St. Anne's Church, it forms a striking architectural ensemble that significantly shapes the skyline of the Old Town.
