Liphofung Cave Monument (Lesotho)

Weather…

The Liphofung Cave Monument is an exceptional cultural and historical site located in northern Lesotho, near the town of Butha-Buthe. The site features a large, overhanging rock shelter that has been occupied by humans for millennia. Its walls are adorned with significant San rock art, depicting hunting scenes and ritual activities of the ancient bushmen. In more recent history, the cave gained national importance as the refuge of King Moshoeshoe I, the founder of the Basotho nation, during the Lifaqane wars of the 1820s. Today, the complex includes a visitor center and a museum that provides detailed information about San culture and the early history of the Basotho monarchy. This unique blend of prehistoric art and royal history makes Liphofung one of the most cherished and sacred national heritage sites in the kingdom.
