Sabile is a gem in the heart of Kurzeme, situated in the scenic Abava Valley, often referred to as 'Latvian Switzerland.' The town holds a remarkable world record: the 'Wine Hill' (Vīna kalns) is listed in the Guinness World Records as the northernmost vineyard in the world. Viticulture in Sabile dates back to the time of the Teutonic Order in the 14th century and is passionately maintained today, with a major wine festival at the end of July. Beyond wine, Sabile is known for its creative flair. The Pedvāle Open-Air Art Museum nearby showcases contemporary sculptures in a vast natural landscape, harmoniously blending art with the topography of the Abava Valley. Sabile's old town charms with its narrow streets and historic 19th-century buildings, as well as the old synagogue now used as a cultural center. For visitors, the region is handy for hiking, cycling, or boating on the Abava River. The nearby 'Abavas rumba' waterfall is not high but very wide and is a popular picnic spot. Sabile is also known for its local cider production. The drive from Riga takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. The best time to visit is summer, especially during the wine festival, when the whole town comes alive.

Getting there
