Engilchek Glacier is a gigantic ice field in eastern Kyrgyzstan, near the border with China and Kazakhstan. It stretches over 60 kilometers and consists of two arms, the Northern and Southern Engilchek. The region is surrounded by the highest peaks of the country, Khan Tengri (7,010 m) and Pobeda Peak (7,439 m), making it a dream destination for extreme mountaineers from around the world. A unique natural phenomenon of the glacier is Lake Merzbacher, a glacial lake that forms every summer and then suddenly drains within a few days through subglacial ice channels. Access to the glacier is extremely demanding and typically occurs by helicopter from Karkara or via a multi-day, strenuous trekking tour over moraines and crevasses. In the base camps on the glacier, adventurers can stay in tents and feel the immense power of nature. The air is thin and the weather extremely volatile, requiring careful planning and professional guidance. The best time for expeditions is July and August. Engilchek Glacier is not a classic tourist destination but one of the last great wildernesses on earth, reserved only for the most experienced explorers.
