Charyn National Park, often called the little brother of the Grand Canyon, is one of Kazakhstan's most impressive natural landscapes. Spanning over 125,000 hectares, it features a dramatic canyon landscape carved by the Charyn River into sedimentary rock over millions of years. Its most famous formation is the 'Valley of Castles,' where wind and water have sculpted bizarre towers, pillars, and walls from the reddish rock, reminiscent of medieval fortresses. Besides the geological wonders, the park is also home to unique flora and fauna. A special highlight is the relict ash grove, a remnant of the last ice age. Visitors can explore the canyons on hiking trails, enjoy panoramic views from various lookout points, or camp on the riverbanks. The extreme temperatures between summer and winter require careful planning for a visit.

Getting there

The canyon is generally accessible via a drive from Almaty, taking approximately three to four hours on paved highways followed by a short section of unpaved road to the main viewpoints.

Spring and autumn are widely considered the good seasons to explore, offering mild temperatures that make walking comfortable, whereas summers can be intensely hot and winters quite snowy.

Terrain & paths

The renowned Valley of Castles features a relatively flat dirt path along the canyon floor, but exploring the surrounding rim involves loose gravel, uneven steps, and steep, rocky sections.

What to bring

Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential for the uneven surfaces, along with ample drinking water, high SPF sun protection, and a wide-brimmed hat to guard against the relentless sun.

Designated parking areas are typically available near the park entrance or the main visitor center, from which you can either walk down into the canyon or take local shuttle services.
