Kaji-Say
Kaji-Say is a fascinating town on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul that bridges its industrial past with a tourism-focused future. Founded in the 1940s for coal and uranium mining, the village has transformed into a top destination for independent travelers. The juxtaposition of rusty-red mountains in the background and the deep blue water of the lake creates a unique visual setting. The absolute highlight nearby is Skazka (Fairy Tale) Canyon, known for its bizarre, multi-colored rock formations that resemble castles, dragons, and waves. The village itself has a good selection of family-run guesthouses and small cafés, noted for their warm hospitality. The beaches here are mostly sandy and significantly less crowded than those on the northern shore, making Kaji-Say a handy spot for relaxing swim days. Furthermore, the lake water in this section is particularly renowned for its clarity and purity. Beyond beach life, Kaji-Say is an excellent base for excursions into surrounding high-altitude valleys or for experiencing traditional Kyrgyz culture, such as the eagle hunting practiced in the area. The best time to visit is July and August for swimmers, while hikers often prefer May or September. Access is straightforward via the main highway along the southern shore.
