Bokonbayevo is a pleasant village on the south shore of Issyk-Kul, the world's second-largest alpine lake. Unlike the more developed north shore, the south has preserved its wild, untouched beauty. The village is world-famous for its tradition of eagle hunting (Berkutchi). Visitors can witness demonstrations by hunters who have refined their skills over generations and learn more about the deep connection between man and bird of prey. In addition to hunting, Bokonbayevo is a hub for traditional Kyrgyz handicrafts. Local workshops produce handmade felt rugs called shyrdaks, and visitors can experience the production process firsthand. The village features a variety of yurt camps where travelers can enjoy nomadic hospitality and sleep under the clear starry sky of the Kyrgyz mountains. The surrounding area gives spectacular hiking opportunities, such as the nearby Skazka Canyon (Fairytale Canyon) with its red sandstone formations. The lake itself is also inviting for a swim, with the water here often cooler and clearer than on the north shore. The culinary scene is characterized by traditional dishes like Beshbarmak and fresh fish from the lake, served in a family atmosphere. Access is usually from Bishkek by minibus (marshrutka) or car, taking about four to five hours. The best time to visit is from June to September, when the weather is good for hiking and swimming. Bokonbayevo is the first-rate place for travelers wanting to dive deep into Kyrgyz culture and experience the raw beauty of the Tien Shan mountains.
