- Visit the open-air petroglyph museum early in the morning to avoid the heat and the crowds.
- The lake water can be chilly even in summer, so take your time getting used to the temperature before swimming.

Cholpon-Ata lies on the northern shore of turquoise Lake Issyk-Kul at around 1620 metres above sea level and is regarded as the most important resort town in Kyrgyzstan. Its permanent population is about 13,000, but in the summer months this number grows tenfold thanks to visitors from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia and, increasingly, China. The name roughly translates as Father of the Morning Star and refers to a legend in which the gods sent the planet Venus to watch over the shepherds along the lake. Already in Soviet times dozens of sanatoriums for industrial workers stood here, and their whitewashed pavilions among the pines of the central park still shape the streetscape. On the edge of town lies the largest petroglyph field in Central Asia, with more than 5000 carved animal and hunting scenes spanning the Bronze Age to the early Middle Ages. In 2014 Cholpon-Ata also hosted the very first World Nomad Games.
