Holy Trinity Cathedral (Kyrgyzstan)

Weather…

The Holy Trinity Cathedral in Karakol is a masterpiece of Russian Orthodox wooden architecture located in eastern Kyrgyzstan. Completed in 1895, the current structure replaced earlier stone churches that were destroyed by powerful earthquakes. The cathedral was built entirely from local Tian Shan fir wood, and according to tradition, it was originally assembled without the use of metal nails. Its striking design features five green onion-shaped domes and intricate wooden carvings on the exterior, typical of late 19th-century Russian ecclesiastical style. During the Soviet period, the church was stripped of its religious function and served variously as a school, gym, and theater before being meticulously restored and returned to the church community in the 1990s. Today, it remains an active place of worship and stands as one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city of Karakol. The interior houses several precious icons, including a copy of the Mother of God of Tikhvin, which draws pilgrims from across the region.
