Dungan Mosque
The Dungan Mosque in Karakol is a unique architectural masterpiece built by Chinese Muslims (Dungans) who fled persecution and settled in Kyrgyzstan in the late 19th century. The mosque was constructed between 1907 and 1910 under the guidance of a Chinese architect and combines traditional Chinese building techniques with Islamic elements. Remarkably, the entire wooden structure was assembled without the use of metal nails. The colorful exterior is decorated with wood carvings depicting mythological creatures such as dragons and phoenixes, while the interior facing Mecca serves as a prayer hall. The Dungan Mosque survived the anti-religious campaigns of the Soviet era largely intact and is still used by the local Muslim community today.
