Orona Atoll Reserve (Kiribati)

Weather…

Orona Atoll, historically called Hull Island, is a quintessential Pacific atoll characterized by a shallow, spirited lagoon connected to the surrounding ocean by over a hundred narrow channels. As a key component of the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA), it showcases a remarkably resilient marine ecosystem. The atoll is a vital sanctuary for the endangered Hawksbill turtle and also supports significant nesting populations of Green sea turtles. Its lagoon is home to rare giant clams (Tridacna), while the outer reefs boast some of the highest densities of reef sharks in the world. Although Orona was inhabited during parts of the 19th and 20th centuries for coconut plantation work, it is now entirely wild. The regeneration of its native forests and the recovery of its wildlife since human departure make it a prime example of island restoration and a critical stronghold for Central Pacific biodiversity.
