Manra Island Sanctuary (Kiribati)

Weather…

Manra Island, formerly known as Sydney Island, is a nearly circular atoll in the Phoenix Islands archipelago of Kiribati. A defining feature of the atoll is its central lagoon, which is completely landlocked and possesses no outlet to the sea, making its waters hypersaline, roughly twice as salty as the surrounding ocean. The island is currently uninhabited following failed resettlement attempts by British colonial authorities in the 1930s, which were abandoned due to severe drought and lack of fresh water. Despite this, ancient Polynesian ruins, including stone platforms and maraes, suggest a much earlier period of human habitation. Manra is a significant sanctuary for wildlife, particularly as a major breeding ground for seabirds such as the wedge-tailed shearwater and various species of boobies. As part of the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA), the atoll is under strict conservation management to preserve its pristine terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The cooler dry season from May to October brings the best bird activity and easier lagoon access. Avoid the rainy season when the lagoon level may rise and birds disperse.
🌅
Best time of day
Birds are most active at dawn and dusk when they feed along the lagoon edge. The intense midday heat often sends them into shade; use that time for rest.
📜
Etiquette
Do not approach the lagoon edge too closely as it may be unstable and disturb feeding birds. No swimming in the hyper-saline lagoon; it can be caustic.
🎒
What to bring
High-quality binoculars are crucial for observing the endemic and uniquely adapted bird species. Bring plenty of water as there is no fresh water source on the island.
🧭
Getting there
Manra is extremely remote; typically visited by scientific expeditions or live-aboard boats. Contact the Phoenix Islands Protected Area for latest access regulations.
🦌
What to expect
The unique species are not numerous; you may need to walk the entire perimeter of the atoll to spot rarer birds. Stay still near likely vantage points for long periods.
