Kanton Island (Kiribati)

Weather…

Kanton, also known as Abariringa, is the largest and only inhabited atoll in the Phoenix Islands group of Kiribati. Shaped like a large triangle, the atoll encloses a massive lagoon that is nearly sealed off from the open ocean, connected only by a single narrow passage on the western side. This unique geography has created a sheltered marine environment teeming with over 150 species of fish and spirited coral formations. Historically, Kanton played a significant role as a joint US-UK administrative base and a vital refueling stop for trans-Pacific commercial flights during the mid-20th century; remnants of the historic airfield and colonial-era structures can still be seen. Currently, a small settlement of fewer than 50 people resides on the island, maintaining a traditional lifestyle focused on fishing and copra production. As part of the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA), a UNESCO World Heritage site, Kanton is a sanctuary for biodiversity, representing one of the most intact oceanic atoll ecosystems left in the world.
