The village of Poland is situated on the western edge of Kiritimati Atoll, the largest coral atoll in the world by land area. It owes its distinctive name to Stanisław Pełczyński, a Polish sailor and engineer who resided on the island in the late 19th century. Pełczyński was instrumental in helping the local population develop efficient irrigation systems for their coconut groves, significantly improving the island's agricultural output. Today, the village is home to about 400 residents whose livelihoods are primarily based on copra production and artisanal fishing. The presence of nearby villages named London and Paris highlights the eclectic colonial influences and the international history that shaped life on this remote Pacific outpost.
