Tabwakea is the largest and most populous settlement on Kiritimati, also known as Christmas Island, within the Line Islands group. Located on the northwestern tip of the atoll, it has surpassed the nearby village of London in population and economic activity. The town serves as a vital hub for the island's administrative services and is home to more than 3,500 residents, many of whom migrated from the more crowded Gilbert Islands. Daily life revolves around the island's vast lagoon and the surrounding Pacific Ocean, with fishing and copra production being the main economic drivers. The community architecture features traditional 'maneaba' meeting houses alongside modest modern dwellings. Tabwakea is essential for the logistics of the island, acting as a base for supply distribution and local trade. As Kiritimati is the world's largest coral atoll by land area, the town plays a crucial role in managing the vast territories and unique ecological preserves, including world-renowned bonefishing flats and massive seabird colonies, that define this remote corner of Kiribati.
