Millennium Island, formerly known as Caroline Atoll, is one of the world's most pristine coral atolls, located in the southern Line Islands of Kiribati. It gained international fame on January 1, 2000, as it was among the first places to welcome the new millennium following a strategic shift in the International Date Line. The atoll is characterized by a ring of small, lush islets surrounding a shallow lagoon, entirely devoid of permanent human settlement for decades. This isolation has preserved a unique ecosystem featuring dense Pisonia grandis forests and thriving populations of the giant coconut crab, the world's largest terrestrial arthropod. The surrounding waters boast exceptional coral health and fish density, making it a critical site for marine biodiversity. As a major breeding ground for seabirds like the Sooty Tern, the atoll is a key conservation area, offering a rare glimpse into a Pacific island environment that remains virtually untouched by modern industrial development.

Best season
The dry season from July to October has the best conditions for exploring the Pisonia forests and observing nesting seabirds. The island's pristine nature means animals are less shy during these months.
Best time of day
Early morning light filters beautifully through the forest canopy, highlighting birds and crabs. Late afternoon is excellent for seeing seabirds returning to roost.
Etiquette
Do not disturb the delicate forest floor where many birds nest; stay on the beach or marked trails. No camping or fires are allowed to preserve the pristine environment.
What to bring
Long trousers and sleeves protect against thorny vegetation and biting insects. Good walking shoes are necessary for traversing the soft, root-filled forest floor.
Getting there
Millennium Island is extremely remote; access is typically by boat from Kiritimati or via special expedition. Permits from the Kiribati government are required and strictly limited.
What to expect
The dense forest makes spotting individual birds challenging; listen for calls and movement to locate them. Be prepared for isolated conditions with no facilities.
