Captain Cook's Landing Site (Kiribati)

Weather…

Captain Cook's Landing Site on Kiritimati is a location of profound historical significance in the heart of the Pacific Ocean. On Christmas Eve, 1777, during his third and final voyage of discovery, Captain James Cook sighted the atoll and made landfall here. Because of the timing of the discovery, he bestowed the name 'Christmas Island' upon the landmass. This site marks the first recorded European contact with the atoll, which is now known as the largest coral atoll in the world by land area. Cook and his crew stayed for several days to observe a solar eclipse and replenish their supplies. Today, commemorative plaques mark the spot where the expedition arrived. The site provides a reflective atmosphere, surrounded by the vast lagoon and the unique biodiversity of the Line Islands, serving as a silent witness to the age of maritime exploration and the charting of the Pacific frontier.
