Mount Korek (Iraq)

Weather…

Mount Korek is a prominent peak located in the Erbil Governorate of the Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq. Standing at approximately 2.127 meters above sea level, it is one of the most recognizable mountains in the area and a major destination for regional tourism. The mountain gained international attention in the 1970s when the Iraqi government under Saddam Hussein began constructing a national astronomical observatory on its summit, a project that was unfortunately halted by subsequent wars. Today, the peak is home to the Mount Korek Resort, accessible by one of the longest cable car systems in the Middle East. Geographically, the mountain features rugged limestone cliffs and experiences heavy snowfall during the winter months, often lasting into spring. The summit provides sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and the nearby town of Rawanduz. Korek has become a symbol of the post-conflict economic revitalization and the growing tourism industry in Kurdistan.
