Rawandiz is a historic town in the Erbil Governorate of the Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq, situated within the Zagros Mountains at an elevation of approximately 500 to 1,000 meters. The town is famous for the Rawandiz Gorge, one of the deepest and most scenic canyons in the Middle East, which was carved by the Rawandiz River over millions of years. Historically, Rawandiz served as the capital of the Soran Emirate during the 19th century, particularly under the rule of Mir Muhammad, known as Kor Mir, who established a significant military and industrial presence there. During this period, the town became a center for weapons manufacturing, including the production of cannons, some of which are still preserved today as historical artifacts. In the modern era, Rawandiz has transformed into a major tourism hub, attracting visitors with its cooler alpine climate, dramatic mountain scenery, and the nearby Gali Ali Bag waterfall. The town is strategically located along the Hamilton Road, a historic engineering marvel completed in 1932 that connects Erbil with the Iranian border.
