Akre
Akre, often called the 'Capital of Newroz', is one of Kurdistan's most photogenic cities. The old town clings steeply to limestone cliffs and is crowned by the ruins of an ancient fortress. Its architecture is defined by narrow alleys and stone houses layered on top of each other. Every year on March 21st, the city turns into a sea of light as thousands of people climb the mountain with torches. Beyond the celebrations, Akre gives beautiful waterfalls and lush gardens in the nearby area. The hospitality of the residents is warm, and local cuisine features hearty Kurdish dishes. A walk through the old bazaar reveals traditional crafts and spices. The best time to visit is March to experience the Newroz festival, or spring for hiking in the green surroundings. Akre is located about 100 kilometers from Erbil and is accessible via a scenic drive. The city has a unique blend of history, culture, and nature.
