💡 Tips
- Never turn your back on the ocean at Reynisfjara beach; the deadly sneaker waves can pull you out to sea without warning.
- Hold your car doors firmly when opening them, as sudden gale-force winds can easily bend the hinges.
- Fill up your gas tank and buy groceries here, as services are very sparse heading further east.
- Walk up to the iconic red-roofed Vík í Mýrdal Church for the best panoramic view of the village and sea stacks.
- If a volcano/tsunami alarm sounds, head immediately up the hill towards the church, the designated safe zone.
🍽 Food
A hearty, traditional Icelandic lamb and root vegetable soup found in local diners.
Look for fresh pan-fried char in the village's slightly more upscale restaurants.
Try dark rye bread often served with smoked fish or thick local butter.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Buy an authentic Icelandic wool sweater at the large Icewear factory store in town.
Check out local souvenir shops for art and jewelry made using volcanic rocks.
A peaceful spot above the village offering sweeping, dramatic views over the Reynisdrangar sea stacks.
Walk the black sands directly in front of the village, which is usually much quieter than Reynisfjara.

Vik i Myrdal is Iceland's southernmost village, located at the foot of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which covers the powerful Katla volcano. The village is world-famous for Reynisfjara, a black sand beach with massive basalt columns and powerful Atlantic waves. Rising from the sea are the Reynisdrangar rock stacks, which legend says are petrified trolls. A landmark of the village is the small Víkurkirkja church, perched on a hill, providing a safe haven in case of a volcanic eruption. Nearby lies the Dyrhólaey peninsula, a birdwatcher's paradise where puffins nest during the summer months. Vik is a crucial stop on the Ring Road and serves as an excellent base for exploring the nearby Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls. The village is also renowned for its high-quality local wool production.
