Ardud is a historic town in Satu Mare County, renowned for its medieval fortress and its romantic literary connections. The fortress was established in 1481 by Bertalan Drágffy and served as a crucial defensive and political center in Northern Transylvania. Ardud gained international cultural fame in the 19th century as the location where the legendary Hungarian poet Petőfi Sándor married Júlia Szendrey in 1847. The ceremony took place in the castle's chapel, making Ardud a pilgrimage site for literature enthusiasts. Later, the noble Károlyi family redesigned the fortress into an impressive Baroque residence, although much of it was damaged during subsequent conflicts. Today, the restored fortress tower and its extensive labyrinth of underground tunnels are open to the public. Geographically, Ardud sits at the junction of the Someș Plain and the Codru Hills, a location that favors viticulture. The town is a key stop on the regional wine route, offering visitors a taste of both local history and artisanal wines.
