The town's history is intertwined with the Dessewffy family, whose Neoclassical castle remains the settlement's most important historic building, recalling the world of former large estates. Nyírtelek was originally known as Királytelek and consisted of numerous smaller 'bokortanya' (farmstead clusters), typical forms of Nyírség farming, before receiving its current name and independent status in 1952. The geographical features, particularly the characteristic sandy soil, are excellent for fruit production, resulting in extensive apple and plum orchards in the vicinity.
