The town of Nyírtelek is located in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, directly northwest of Nyíregyháza, a dynamic settlement situated on the sandy slopes of the Nyírség region. The town's history is intertwined with the Dessewffy family, whose Neoclassical castle remains the settlement's most important historic building, recalling the world of former large estates. Nyírtelek was originally known as Királytelek and consisted of numerous smaller 'bokortanya' (farmstead clusters), typical forms of Nyírség farming, before receiving its current name and independent status in 1952. The geographical features, particularly the characteristic sandy soil, are excellent for fruit production, resulting in extensive apple and plum orchards in the vicinity. Residents proudly preserve 'Tirpák' traditions, representing the cultural heritage of Lutheran Slovaks resettled around Nyíregyháza, which still resonates in local gastronomy and folk customs. Nyírtelek is also strategically important for transportation, lying along the main road and railway line toward Záhony, which facilitated the establishment of industrial plants. The town's modern image is defined by new educational institutions and tidy public spaces, while nearby forests and meadows provide a relaxing environment for hikers. During annual town days and cultural meetings, the community showcases its values, strengthening local identity in the shadow of the county seat.
