Esztergom Basilica (Hungary)

Weather…

The Esztergom Basilica, formally known as the Primatial Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary Assumed Into Heaven and St. Adalbert, is the largest church in Hungary and the seat of the Catholic Church in the country. Perched on Castle Hill overlooking the Danube, this Neoclassical masterpiece was built between 1822 and 1869, following designs by Pál Kühnel and József Hild. A standout feature is the Bakócz Chapel, a 16th-century red marble Renaissance chapel that was dismantled into 1,600 pieces and reassembled within the modern structure. The main altarpiece, painted by Michelangelo Grigoletti, is the world's largest painting executed on a single piece of canvas. The basilica also houses an extensive treasury, containing priceless liturgical objects, including medieval chalices and the Hungarian coronation cross. Its vast crypt serves as the final resting place for many Hungarian archbishops, most notably Cardinal József Mindszenty. Visitors can climb to the dome's gallery for a wide-open panoramic view of the Danube Bend and the Slovakian border.
