Battle of Párkány (Slovakia)

Weather…

The battlefield of Párkány (now Štúrovo) was the site of a pivotal military engagement in October 1683 during the Great Turkish War. Following the victory at the Battle of Vienna, the combined Christian forces, led by Polish King Jan III Sobieski and Duke Charles V of Lorraine, pursued the retreating Ottoman army. The battle took place in two stages on October 7 and 9. While the first day resulted in a near-disaster for the Polish king, the second stage saw an overwhelming victory for the Holy League. The Ottomans suffered massive casualties as they attempted to cross the Danube into Esztergom over a failing bridge. This triumph led directly to the recapture of the strategic fortress of Esztergom and signaled the beginning of the end of 150 years of Ottoman rule in Hungary. Today, an equestrian statue of King Jan III Sobieski on the Danube riverbank in Štúrovo commemorates this crucial turning point in European history.
