Hron Wetlands (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Hron Wetlands (Alúvium Hrona) constitute an ecologically precious area in central Slovakia, preserving significant remnants of alluvial landscapes. The site is dedicated to protecting the natural river dynamics and the associated flora and fauna along the country's second-longest river. The vegetation is characterized by soft-wood floodplains featuring willows and poplars, and hard-wood floodplains with ash and elm trees. In the stagnant waters and marshes, rare plants such as the summer snowflake (Leucojum aestivum) can be found. The area serves as a critical habitat for numerous amphibian species and is a major breeding ground for waterfowl. Maintaining the hydrology of the wetlands is essential, as they function as a natural flood defense and contribute to the purification of surface water. Due to human activities and river regulations, such intact ecosystems have become rare in Slovakia, making the Hron Wetlands a priority for conservation. The area is integrated into the European Natura 2000 network.
