The Karouni Gold Mine is located in the Cuyuni-Mazaruni region of central Guyana and is operated by Troy Resources Guyana Inc. Mining officially commenced in 2015 following extensive exploration work in the Smarts and Hicks areas. The facility features a conventional crushing and grinding circuit and a carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant for gold extraction. Geologically, the mine is situated on the Paleoproterozoic Guiana Shield, a region renowned for its prolific gold deposits. Despite operational challenges and temporary closures, the mine remains a significant component of Guyana's mining sector. The infrastructure includes its own airstrip and camps for accommodating workers on-site. Protecting the surrounding rainforest areas represents an ongoing ecological requirement for the mining operations.
