Fort Kyk-Over-Al (Guyana)

Weather…

Fort Kyk-Over-Al is situated at the confluence of the Cuyuni, Mazaruni, and Essequibo rivers, marking the birthplace of Dutch colonization in Guyana. Built in 1616, the fort was the first permanent settlement of the Dutch West India Company in the region and served as the first capital of the Essequibo colony. Its name translates to 'See over all,' referring to its excellent strategic location from which all three river routes could be controlled. The fort was a crucial trading post for exchanging goods with indigenous peoples and securing territorial claims against other European powers. Today, only ruins remain, most notably a distinctive brick archway that was once part of the main entrance. Despite its ruined state, Kyk-Over-Al remains a symbol of the beginning of Guyana's modern history. The site is maintained by the National Trust of Guyana and holds great national significance for understanding the country's colonial roots.
