Konawaruk Forest

The Konawaruk Forest stretches along the Konawaruk River in the Potaro-Siparuni region of central Guyana. This area is geographically characterized by hilly terrain and dense tropical montane rainforests that exhibit enormous biological diversity. However, the forest is also historically closely linked to gold mining, which has been conducted in the river's alluvial deposits since the late 19th century. These activities have left deep scars on the landscape, making the Konawaruk Forest a focal point for ecological restoration projects today. The region serves as an important habitat for the jaguar, as well as numerous rare bird species and amphibians. Hydrologically, the area is of great significance as the Konawaruk River is a major tributary of the Essequibo. Geologically, the basement consists of Precambrian rocks of the Pastora Supergroup, rich in metallic ores. In recent times, there have been increased efforts to reconcile mining with forest protection to preserve the ecological balance of this valuable wilderness.
