Weather…

Uplistsikhe is an ancient rock-hewn town in the Shida Kartli region, carved directly into the cliffs on the left bank of the Mtkvari River. Founded in the late 2nd millennium BC, it developed into one of the most important political and religious centers of pre-Christian Kartli. The complex includes numerous structures, such as temples, residential houses, a theater, and storage cellars, all chiseled directly from the sandstone. Of particular note is the combination of pagan shrines with later Christian influences, such as the basilica built on the summit in the 10th century. Uplistsikhe was a significant node on the Silk Road trade routes until it was severely damaged by Mongol invasions in the 13th century. An earthquake in 1920 destroyed further parts of the site, but the remaining sections offer a fascinating insight into ancient urban planning and rock-cut architecture.
