Kaspi is a small town of around 13,000 inhabitants in the Shida Kartli region of central Georgia, lying some 50 kilometres west of Tbilisi on the Kura River. Bronze Age finds show that the area has been inhabited for several millennia, and medieval Georgian chronicles mention Kaspi as a market and key bridgehead on the military road linking the kingdom of Iberia with its western provinces. The town acquired its modern character in the 20th century through the large cement works fed by nearby limestone quarries, still one of Georgia's most important construction-industry plants. The streetscape combines Stalinist housing blocks, post-Soviet administrative buildings and old Orthodox churches, among which the 11th-century Church of the Dormition stands out. A few kilometres away rises the cave city of Uplistsikhe on a rocky terrace above the Kura: with its temple hall, theatre and dwelling caves dating from the 1st millennium BC, it is one of the oldest urban settlements in the Caucasus.
